During Year 9, children choose subjects that they would like to study in the 10th and 11th grade and from which they will take the GCSE exams. GCSE exams take place during May and June, and students receive results by mail during August.
Grades range from the best A to G, or U (Unclassified. i.e. Fail). In addition, in English, mathematics, and science, the GCSE exams are divided into two groups according to difficulty:
Foundation GCSE - they are simpler, but the highest possible grade that can be achieved is C.
Higher GCSE - are more difficult and can be graded from A to D.
Some subjects are compulsory (English, mathematics, and science), others optional. Optional courses vary, but students must be offered at least one course from the following four groups:
Arts (art and design, music, dance, drama education, and media art)
Tailor-made tutoring and the method of one tutor per pupil
Placement test that detects gaps in the topic
Individual study program
Intensive practice of the problematic areas
Set of examples to practice at home
Motivation to learn
